Memberships, not subscriptions.

When you offer a real membership, making a consumer feel part of the community and give them opportunities to feel like they are part of a group; it would be profitable. Subscriptions are so non-personal and slapping a $8/month price is even more impersonal. Bilton explains that they are offering memberships where the companies are even giving perks to the new members for events. This kind of thing is something that readers (the ones who really care to pay for and read the news) will love. I agree that only certain niches will be able to pull of the memberships, I think that if one of the more popular fashion magazines decided to have memberships as well, and give the same kinds of perks/benefits they would be profitable as well.
